Welcome to Recipes from Suburbia - eatables for ordinary living! I’m Nikki, resident blogger and self proclaimed suburban food expert in constant learning mode. What does that mean for you? That means I’m always on the hunt for ways to enhance everday recipes.

Good, old-fashioned comfort food that sometimes steps outside the box. But why only sometimes? Cause sometimes the classics shouldn’t be touched. Like the Best Carrot Cake Ever! You won’t find any raisins or pecans or walnuts or coconut anywhere near this simple classic. But be prepared to make this over and over and over again!
You’ll find your classic recipes…only better. Like Holy Guacamole.
    Simple ingredients = simply delicious!

I came from your standard meat & potato family. When I turned 16, i delved into making lasagna for my birthday. And not one of those frozen ones in the tinfoil pan either. Straight from scratch. It was fabulous except for the fact that it took over 6 hours! Needless to say, I’ve improved upon such recipe so I’m not chained to the oven for the afternoon.

My passion for cooking continued into my later years. But with a couple speedbumps along the way. I have 2 major food intolerances. Funny.

Egg whites - you don’t realize how many foods contain egg whites until you can’t eat them. I miss egg salad sandwiches.
Milk - I’m not deathly intolerant of milk products so I can work my way around this, however, it gets really bad when a recipe calls for cream, butter, & eggs!
I still really enjoy making recipes with these ingredients for my family.

I’ve also started becoming more aware of how food affects my body. I’ve drastically reduced the amount of white potatoes I eat (just don’t get in between me and my french fries). And I’ve reduced the white breads I eat. Being in this predicament has helped me discover recipes I may have never tried before. Like Sweet Potato Skins. No mini marshmallows, please.

Ultimately I hope you’ll find a good balance of recipes here that will please the family. Recipes that will inspire you to try something different in your old stand-bys. Recipes that will become new family favourites. Experiment & have some fun!
