Northwood is a Non-Profit Sanctuary Dedicated to providing a clean, safe and loving environment to over 100 exotic animal species. Including Tigers, Lions, Primates, Bears, Wolves, Buffalo, Eagles, Owls and other wonderful creatures.

Here they are provided the care and respect they deserve so that they may live out their lives with dignity. We have a responsibility to provide for them the best life possible. Hopefully, despite some of their respective backgrounds, they can learn to trust people again.

It is our sincere hope that through public awareness and education we can all learn to share our world with the many diverse species on it, and develop a much better understanding of and kinder treatment towards our animal friends.

Northwood is fully licensed by the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. Northwood also provides Educational tours for Public Schools, Senior Citizen Groups and Special Needs Groups, to name a few. With Education being one of our main goals, we pride ourselves in sharing our experience and knowledge not only with the general public, but also with students involved in Work / Education Placements through the Oshawa business school and Durham College as well as Secondary School Co-op Placements. We are also participants in the Ontario Disability Support Program, Scugog & Durham Region Tourism, various community events and also charitable organizations such as The Children’s Wish Foundation.

The Bowmanville Zoo has over 300 creatures including many famous animal celebrities. Visit them amidst 42 scenic acres of untamed, natural parkland. Bowmanville Zoo is Canada’s oldest privately owned zoo. We’re almost 100 years old.

Here we’re dedicated to the protection and conservation of endangered species. Children (including those young at heart!) will learn about the animals in unique and entertaining ways, particularly through first-hand experience. Such an educational approach has proven to be most effective in facilitating learning.

Imagine such extraordinary and memorable events as feeding wildlife from around the world; riding an elephant or a camel; the thrill of recognizing animals which have appeared in movies, on TV shows, in commercials, in magazines and advertisements.

Our animal talent includes:

  • Baghera, the magnificent black jaguar from Peter Benchley’s Amazon
  • A bevy of camels from The Thirteenth Warrior starring Antonio Banderas
  • Billy, the white Bengal tiger from the TV series Animorphs

Plus, check out Bowmanville Zoo’s amazing 400-seat indoor ANIMATHEATRE.
You’re guaranteed to have a remarkable family adventure at the Bowmanville Zoo!

Located only 45 minutes east of Toronto, On the Old Kings Highway, in the Historical Town of Bowmanville. Take Hwy 401 East, Exit at Liberty St.(432), follow North to King St. and turn right, this is also
